The Calcutta High Court has granted interim relief to Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra by staying her arrest warrant. This means no strict legal action will be taken against her for now.
Justice Debangsu Basak issued the interim stay on the arrest warrant issued by a lower court.
The court order will remain in effect until August 31 or the next court hearing. The next hearing for this case is scheduled for August 27.
A group of women from Krishnanagar had filed a complaint against Mahua Moitra.
The complaint accused her of inciting violence, hurting religious feelings, and making controversial remarks. She was instructed to appear personally in the Krishnanagar district court, but she did not attend. Following her absence, the judicial magistrate issued an arrest warrant against her.
Mahua Moitra challenged the arrest warrant in the Calcutta High Court.
Her lawyer argued that the local court does not have the jurisdiction to hear this matter. The defense stated that since she is an MP, the case should only be heard in a special court for MP and MLA cases. The High Court will continue its hearing on the matter on August 27.
