BJP Takes Control of Two Gram Panchayats in Rajganj

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured the positions of Pradhan and Upa-Pradhan in the Sukhani and Majhiyali Gram Panchayats of the Rajganj block in Jalpaiguri district.
Changes in Sukhani Gram Panchayat
Following the board formation process held on Wednesday, Uttam Ray was elected as the Pradhan and Sabita Biswas as the Upa-Pradhan of the Sukhani Gram Panchayat. The local body has a total of 21 seats, where the Trinamool Congress won 18 seats and the BJP won three seats in the 2023 panchayat elections. Despite the Trinamool Congress holding a majority, the BJP representatives were elected to the top posts during the meeting where 16 members were present, including 13 members from the Trinamool Congress.
Developments in Majhiyali Gram Panchayat
In the Majhiyali Gram Panchayat, the BJP also captured the top leadership roles. The council consists of 19 seats, distributed as 12 for the Trinamool Congress, six for the BJP, and one for the CPI(M). During the board formation, 12 Trinamool Congress members and six BJP members attended the meeting, yet BJP candidates Sugriv Ray and Rinku Ghorami Ray were elected as Pradhan and Upa-Pradhan respectively.
Background of the Board Formation
This transition follows the resignation of the previous Trinamool Congress Pradhans of both Sukhani and Majhiyali Gram Panchayats in June. These resignations occurred after shifts in the political landscape of the state. The process for the new board formation began after these vacancies were created, leading to the selection of new leadership on Wednesday. The transition of power in these two local bodies as reported by Hindusthan Samachar has resulted in the BJP taking charge of the administration in both panchayats.
