BJP Leaders Targeted With Eggs During Protest in Sitalkuchi

A tense situation unfolded in the Sitalkuchi area of Cooch Behar on Tuesday when local BJP leaders faced protests from members of their own party. The incident occurred in Pancharhat under the Chhota Salbari Gram Panchayat, where a meeting was scheduled between BJP leaders and representatives from the Trinamool Congress. The protest erupted after party supporters expressed strong opposition to the proposed meeting with the ruling party members.
Reasons Behind the Party Conflict
According to local reports, the disagreement began because party workers were unhappy about the meeting with Trinamool Congress representatives. The protesters alleged that these representatives had previously been involved in various cases and had committed atrocities against BJP supporters in the past. This disagreement led to heated arguments and physical confrontations between the party leaders and the local workers. Some leaders were reportedly surrounded inside the party office during the commotion.
Police Intervention and Reported Injuries
As the situation escalated, police were called to the scene to restore order and escort the leaders to safety. During this process, eggs were allegedly thrown at the BJP Mandal President Pavitra Adhikari and Mandal General Secretary Prasenjit Sarkar. Reports also indicate that BJP leader Shankar Sarkar and party member Beauty Barman sustained injuries during the scuffle. While the situation caused significant tension in the area, police managed to bring the crowd under control.
Differing Claims and Political Reactions
Following the incident, the involved BJP leaders denied that the protesters were part of their party and stated that a formal complaint would be filed with the police. BJP leader Kanak Barman claimed that the eggs might have been intended for the Trinamool Congress representatives rather than the party leaders themselves. Meanwhile, other political figures, including Left leader Prasenjit Sarkar and Congress leader Bishwajit Sarkar, condemned the violence, describing the incident as harmful to democratic norms and social harmony. The matter remains under investigation by local authorities as reported by Hindusthan Samachar.
