Assam Environment and Forest Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah inaugurated Wildlife Week 2026 at the Assam State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden in Guwahati on Friday. The inauguration began with a traditional Hasti Pujan to promote wildlife conservation and public awareness. Following the ceremony, wildlife field staff organised a bike rally and a giraffe at the zoo is set to be formally named as part of the week-long festivities.
The state government is investing around Rs 340 crore to transform the zoo into a world-class wildlife destination.
Construction work for the redevelopment is currently underway at the facility. The project aims to upgrade the overall infrastructure and visitor experience at the zoo.
The redevelopment project includes a massive aviary that is set to be one of the largest in the world.
A toy train is also being introduced to allow visitors to tour the entire zoo. Additionally,
facilities including the hospital, quarantine centre and rescue centre are being developed to a high standard along with upgraded animal enclosures.
