Assam has started building a new 3,200 MW thermal power plant in the Dhubri district to solve electricity shortages. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Adani Group Director Jeet Adani led the foundation stone ceremony on 20 September 2026.
The state currently uses much more power than it makes. Official data shows
demand is at 3,026 MW while local generation is only 400 MW. The state buys the rest from the open market at high costs, and demand is expected to reach 5,800 MW by 2032.
Adani Power is building the Chapar facility with an investment of about
₹48,000 crore. The full 3,200 MW capacity is expected to be working by 2032, starting with the first unit in December 2030.
Construction will need
20,000 to 25,000 workers, and the plant will provide about 5,000 permanent jobs later. Officials state that 4,500 local youth have already been hired through early job drives.
