Assam Schools Set To Reopen After Severe Flood Damage

Assam Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu held a review meeting at the District Commissioner’s Office in Sivasagar on August 3, 2026, to evaluate the impact of recent floods on local schools. Official reports indicate that 545 out of 1,233 schools in the Sivasagar district suffered damage, with many campuses remaining underwater. The Minister has ordered an immediate and thorough assessment of all school infrastructure, including buildings, classrooms, libraries, and digital equipment.

Reopening Plan for Flood Affected Schools

Despite the ongoing challenges, the government has scheduled the reopening of schools in districts like Sivasagar and Charaideo for August 10, 2026. For schools that are still submerged or unsafe for students, the administration will implement alternative plans. These arrangements include holding classes at relief camps or moving students to nearby functional school buildings to ensure education continues. The government has committed to providing the necessary funds and resources for textbook distribution and urgent repairs to reduce the loss of academic time.

Government Financial Support and Current Status

The state government has approved a financial aid package of ₹15.86 crore to assist 793 schools across four districts. Each of these schools will receive ₹2 lakh through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system to cover repair costs. As of August 6, 2026, Sivasagar remains one of the worst-hit areas in Assam, with 49,515 people currently affected by the flooding. Previously, the district administration had extended the summer vacation until August 9 because 982 schools and over 81,000 students were impacted by the disaster.
