An unidentified e-rickshaw driver was severely injured in a targeted knife attack on T.R. Phukan Road in Bongaigaon town, Assam, on the morning of September 28, 2026. The incident happened in broad daylight while the victim was carrying passengers through a busy commercial area.
According to the victim, the attacker seemed to be under the influence of narcotics and tried to commit a robbery before attacking him physically.
The attacker cut the driver deeply with a blade and then ran away into nearby alleys. Local shopkeepers and bystanders helped take the bleeding driver to a local hospital where he had emergency surgery.
Bongaigaon police have blocked off the market area to check CCTV footage and are searching for the attacker.
Local transport unions held a short protest to ask authorities for more police patrols at busy auto and e-rickshaw stands to protect drivers. As of September 29, 2026, police have not made any arrests and the investigation is still going on.
