Soldiers from the Indian Army Assam Regiment have won a Gold Medal at Exercise Cambrian Patrol 2026 in Wales. This achievement marks a major performance in a tough military competition as reported by the Indian Army on 13 October 2026. The British Army hosted this event between 2 and 13 October 2026 through the Headquarters 160th Welsh Brigade. Data from the British Army shows this edition was the largest since the competition started in 1959. A total of 140 patrol entries participated in the event, including international patrols.
Participants must complete a course of approximately 60 kilometres within roughly 48 hours.
Every soldier carries a load of up to 32 kg through steep terrain according to the British Army. Tasks performed during the patrol include reconnaissance, radio communications, and casualty evacuation. Teams also navigate through minefields and respond to simulated threats. Official photographs released by @adgpi show a soldier with a shoulder patch reading BHAIRAV, which aligns with the 6th Battalion of the Assam Regiment.
History for the regiment began on 15 June 1941 in Shillong to meet regional security demands.
The unit earned six battle honours including the defence of Kohima and Jessami during the second world war. Its soldiers have been awarded many gallantry medals. Previous winners from India include the Gorkha Rifles and the Garhwal Rifles.
