Assam Receives 1000 Crore Aid for Massive Flood Recovery
Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on August 12, 2026, that the state has received ₹1,000 crore from the Central Government to support flood relief and infrastructure rebuilding efforts. The state administration is focusing on emergency repairs and long-term engineering solutions to restore connectivity across the region.
Financial Assistance for Affected Families
The State Government has already disbursed ₹150 crore to district authorities to provide immediate support to those impacted by the monsoon floods. According to the relief package, each family in relief camps or self-arranged shelters will receive ₹3,800. Additionally, the government is providing ₹1,000 to each of the 101,000 students who lost their study materials. An initial amount of nearly ₹112 crore was transferred to 75,000 families in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat districts. Eligible families will also receive interim financial assistance of ₹15,000, with an extra ₹10,000 provided to households in the worst-affected Sivasagar and Charaideo districts.
Infrastructure and Public Works Restoration
The Public Works Department is working to repair flood-damaged roads across the state, including in Guwahati, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Nazira, and Jorhat, before Durga Puja. The government has also released ₹11.3 crore to rebuild 494 flood-damaged Anganwadi centers. Furthermore, a grant of ₹1.5 lakh has been allocated for each damaged Namghar, which are traditional prayer houses in the region. Engineering experts are currently clearing debris and stabilizing riverbanks to protect vital transport routes, including the bridge sector near Amguri.
Ongoing Damage Assessment Drive
A rapid relief assessment drive was launched on August 9, 2026, to determine the full extent of the destruction. The survey has already assessed over 8,000 families, with initial damage estimates reaching ₹150 crore. This assessment is currently covering districts such as Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Dibrugarh. Officials expect to reach between 50,000 and 60,000 families across Upper Assam by August 30, with a second phase of the survey scheduled for completion by September 15. The state government continues to coordinate with district authorities to ensure the Assam flood relief efforts reach all affected areas.
