District police in Assam have caught a large shipment of foreign poppy seeds worth rupees 2.43 crore. Police recovered 16257 kilograms of poppy seeds from a vehicle near the Mizoram border on September 22, 2026. The official details were shared by the Press Information Bureau.
Four people were arrested on the spot during the operation. The shipment was hidden inside 290 bags to avoid checks. Authorities stopped the vehicle on secondary routes to bypass highway checkposts.
The bags had foreign markings and lacked proper import papers required under Indian rules.
Investigators believe the poppy seeds were smuggled from Myanmar. The operation was part of a wider anti-smuggling drive along the border.
Officers are checking phone records and freight bills to find the financing network behind the illegal transport.
