Assam Police Seize Elephant Tusks Near Indo-Bhutan Border

The Special Task Force of the Assam Police arrested two men in the Tamulpur district for their involvement in the illegal trade of elephant ivory. This operation was conducted following specific intelligence reports regarding a wildlife smuggling deal taking place near the Indo-Bhutan border in Bangalipara.

Details of the Seizure

During the operation, the police recovered two elephant ivory tusks. These tusks had a total weight of 4.06 kilograms. The authorities identified the two suspects as 24-year-old Gwhwm Basumatary and 23-year-old Swdwbma Basumatary. Reports indicate that the individuals were attempting to sell the illegal ivory for approximately ₹6 lakh.

Legal Action Taken

After the arrest, the police handed over both the suspects and the seized elephant tusks to the Forest Department for further action. Formal charges have been filed against the two men under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. A local court has ordered that both suspects be kept in judicial custody while the investigation continues.

Law enforcement officials are now working to determine the origin of the ivory tusks.
