Assam Police Deny Silchar Jail Gangster Claims
Assam Police have strongly rejected claims that jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria is running a criminal syndicate or using social media from Silchar Central Jail.
The Assam Police issued a formal statement calling the reports mischievous and baseless. The clarification came after misinterpretations of a United States government report published in July 2026. Officials stated the report only mentioned Bhagwanpuria in connection with criminal operations in the United States and said nothing about him operating from a prison in Assam.
High Level Search Conducted
Following unverified media claims, authorities conducted a high-level physical search at the correctional facility on July 11, 2026. The District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police of Cachar, along with senior jail officials, inspected the premises. No illicit activity or digital devices were found during the detailed search and enquiry.
Cyber Forensics Check on Social Media
Police also addressed allegations about the inmate having an online presence. Cyber forensics examined three Instagram handles operating under the gangster's name. Two accounts were made between 2016 and 2017 with no recent activity, while a third account created in 2023 had zero posts. No evidence was found showing the inmate used social media while inside Silchar Central Jail.
