Assam Partners With IIT Guwahati To Stop Riverbank Erosion

The Assam State Government is moving away from temporary repairs to focus on advanced, science-based engineering to stop the severe riverbank erosion caused by the Brahmaputra River. This ongoing issue destroys fertile land, houses, and infrastructure every year. On Sunday, August 2, 2026, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a new partnership with technical experts from IIT Guwahati to create a long-term plan to handle this problem, as reported by ANI News. The state government plans to use scientific expertise to manage the impact of the Brahmaputra River on local communities.

Assessing Erosion in Dibrugarh

Chief Minister Sarma visited several areas in the Dibrugarh district, including Chabua, Balijan, Pukhurijan, Dinjan, and Rohmoria, to see the damage caused by the river. The new scientific plan will use a mix of geo-bag revetments, reinforced embankments, and advanced hydrological modeling. These measures are designed to work alongside an existing 90-crore rupee erosion protection project planned by the Water Resources Department.

Ongoing Protection Work

To provide immediate relief, anti-erosion work using geo-bags is currently happening along a 3-km stretch of the riverbank at Pukhurijan. This work is being paid for by Oil India Limited through a 9-crore rupee Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. The state government is prioritizing immediate protection for the most vulnerable sections of the riverbank.

Future Strategy for Riverbank Safety

By using modern technology and better construction methods, the state aims to protect riverine communities, save farmland, and reduce land loss along the Brahmaputra basin. The Chief Minister is scheduled to meet with experts from IIT Guwahati soon to discuss these sustainable measures further. The goal is to develop durable and effective solutions to withstand the force of the river.
