This new strategy replaces temporary fixes with advanced engineering to protect land, homes, and infrastructure from annual destruction.
The state government is moving toward long-term protection methods to secure vulnerable riverbanks. This plan includes using geo-bag revetments, reinforced embankments, and detailed hydrological modeling. These measures are designed to support the Water Resources Department’s ongoing
₹90-crore erosion protection project, which aims to
safeguard agricultural livelihoods and reduce land loss across the Brahmaputra basin.
While planning for long-term solutions, the government is also managing immediate crises caused by rising water levels. On August 5, emergency reinforcements such as geo-bags and porcupine structures were placed at an embankment in the Lakhimpur district. This specific location is part of a
₹29.08 crore anti-erosion project funded by the Asian Development Bank. Officials are working to ensure these structures hold under current pressure.
Assam Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah visited the erosion-hit areas in Lakhimpur to oversee the situation and direct officials to draft plans for permanent repairs. Additionally, recent erosion in the Dibrugarh district damaged the historic Kohair No. 1 Spur, leading to public requests for urgent, scientific intervention. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is
monitoring these developments closely and has scheduled meetings with IIT Guwahati experts to finalize the upcoming infrastructure plans.
