Assam Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu held a meeting at the District Commissioner’s Office in Sivasagar on August 3, 2026, to evaluate the impact of recent floods on local schools. Official data indicates that 545 out of 1,233 schools in the district suffered damage from floodwaters, with many campuses facing significant restoration challenges ahead of the academic reopening.

Schools Resume Operations After Flood Assessment

Following the review, schools in the Sivasagar district are reopening from Monday, August 10, 2026, in areas where conditions allow. Dr. Pegu directed district officials to perform a detailed assessment of school buildings, classrooms, furniture, libraries, and digital equipment. The government has identified the resumption of classes as a top priority and promised to provide the necessary funds for repairs, textbook distribution, and infrastructure restoration to ensure students face minimal disruption.

Alternative Arrangements for Damaged Schools

For educational institutions that cannot reopen due to waterlogging, silt, or structural damage, the authorities have set up alternative teaching plans. Students from these affected schools will attend classes at relief camps or nearby functional schools to maintain continuity in their studies. The Sivasagar district administration had previously extended school closures until August 9 to allow sufficient time for essential cleaning and sanitization work across the campuses.
