Assam Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Pijush Hazarika reviewed development activities and launched new projects in West Karbi Anglong on Tuesday. The minister inspected an irrigation scheme, launched an olive cultivation pilot project, and inaugurated local infrastructure in Hamren.
During his visit, Hazarika inspected the Kollonga Flow Irrigation Scheme located under the Rongkhang Legislative Assembly Constituency.
The current scheme irrigates about 100 hectares of land and has the potential to cover up to 1,800 hectares. The minister directed the Chief Engineer to prepare a proposal to expand the scheme so that more local farmers can benefit from it.
Hazarika planted the first olive sapling at Sarogaon to launch a pilot project checking the feasibility of olive farming in the state.
A total of 16,000 olive saplings from Rajasthan are being used for this initiative. The project is a joint effort by the Department of Agriculture, the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Diphu, under NMEO-OS 2025-26, and the Horticulture Research Station of Assam Agricultural University at Kahikuchi to help increase farmer incomes. Later, the minister visited a 100-bigha diversified farm owned by progressive farmer Bimal Singh Bey at Chengbiri.
In Hamren, Hazarika inaugurated the Soi Ali-to-Circuit House road and the SBI ATM-to-Harlongjuve road built under the Construction and Improvement of Hamren Town initiative.
He also opened a new Guest House-cum-Conference Hall and laid the foundation stone for a new Circuit House. Following these events, the minister chaired a review meeting with department heads at the newly opened facility, directing officials to speed up road construction and complete projects on time.
