Assam Environment and Forest Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah has officially reopened the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary for the 2026-27 tourism season. The decision was taken to meet the increasing tourist footfall during the Navaratri festival and the rising number of visitors coming to Guwahati.
The sanctuary has introduced new Gypsy vehicles to manage the high demand from visitors.
Elephant safaris in the sanctuary are scheduled to begin in November, according to the minister. Manas National Park reopened on October 2, Kaziranga National Park on October 3, and Pobitora reopened on October 13, making all three major wildlife destinations in the region fully open for visitors.
Pabitora has a high rhino density of 16 rhinos per square kilometre and the region has achieved a state of zero rhino poaching compared to past years. According to the official
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary website, the protected area is known for having the highest density of Greater One Horned Rhinoceros in India. The sanctuary includes the Rajamayong Reserve Forest and the Pobitora Reserve Forest, and it served as the source population for the Indian Rhinoceros Vision 2020 program.
