Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma performed the bhumi pujan and laid the foundation stone of the ISTRAC Advanced Radar Research Facility at Chandrapur in Kamrup Metropolitan district. The facility is being established under the Indian Space Research Organisation to enhance India's Space Situational Awareness capabilities.
The new facility is being developed as part of Project NETRA to monitor and track objects in outer space.
It will be equipped with advanced radar systems and optical telescopes to protect India's space assets.
The first radar for cloud research is expected to be installed by February next year, which will enhance scientific understanding of weather and atmospheric phenomena in the region.
The State Government allotted around 200 bighas of land at the former Chandrapur Thermal Power Station site for the project.
Chief Minister Sarma stated that the facility would help create a dedicated platform for advanced research in space science and inspire young students.
