Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Adani Group director Jeet Adani laid the foundation stone on 20 September 2026 for a new 3200 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power plant at Chapar in Dhubri district. This project represents one of the largest single industrial investments in the state and serves as the largest power generation asset planned for the Northeast region. Official filings and state government statements indicate the power plant will consist of four distinct units, each capable of generating 800 MW of electricity. Construction of the Chapar plant is scheduled to result in the employment of roughly 20,000 to 25,000 workers, while the completed site will require about 5,000 permanent staff members once operational.
