Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone for a 3200 megawatt thermal power plant in the Chapar area of Dhubri district on September 20, 2026. This 48,000 crore project represents a major private investment intended to resolve the power deficit currently affecting the state.
Assam currently faces a significant power shortfall with state electricity demand sitting at approximately 3,026 MW. Local generation only provides about 400 MW.
Adani Power Limited received the official Letter of Award from the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited in November 2025 after processing necessary environmental clearances. The facility occupies 585 hectares of land in the villages of Charuabakhra, Chirakuta I and II, and Santoshpur within the Chapar revenue circle.
Official records from the Adani Group confirm an investment of 48,000 crore for four 800 MW ultra supercritical units.
Construction activities expect to create 20,000 to 25,000 jobs while the plant will support 5,000 permanent roles once operational. The developer has already launched job drives that resulted in the hiring of 4,500 local youth.
The company targets a phased commissioning starting in December 2030 with the first 800 MW unit.
Engineers expect to reach full capacity by approximately 2032. Stakeholders will track progress through periodic state updates, environmental compliance reports, and official capacity addition data.
