Assam Launches Bamboo E-Cycles for Green Mobility

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma officially launched the Assam Bamboo E-Cycles initiative on Friday, October 2, 2026, at the Sati Radhika Shanti Udyan in Uzanbazar, Guwahati. This launch coincides with Gandhi Jayanti and aims to promote sustainable urban mobility while using the state traditional bamboo industry.

Partnership and Production

The electric bicycles are made using treated local bamboo varieties and modern electric propulsion technology. The project is done in partnership with the Pune-based company Bamboo India Private Limited, which has invested about Rs 15 crore in Assam. The company plans to make about 1,000 bicycles every month in the first phase. These bikes can travel up to 50 kilometers on a single charge for a cost of five rupees.

Safety and Deployments

The bicycles have received quality and safety certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards. The state government plans to use these cycles in educational campuses, urban parks, and eco-tourism corridors. Officials present at the launch included Chief Secretary Ravi Kota, Bureau of Indian Standards Deputy Director General Dr. Meenakshi Ganeshan, and Bamboo India Private Limited Founder and Director Yogesh Suresh Sinde. The project will create 50 to 100 direct jobs in its first year. More details can be found in the official source document available at News on Air.
