Assam Landslides Disrupt Northeast Frontier Railway

Heavy monsoon rains and landslides have caused major disruptions to train services in Assam. Torrential monsoon rains and landslides have triggered severe disruptions along the Lumding–Badarpur mountain route in Assam's Dima Hasao district, severely impacting rail connectivity. The Northeast Frontier Railway reported that persistent rainfall led to soil subsidence beneath two of the three tracks near New Harangajao station, affecting a stretch of approximately 300 meters. Consequently, train operations have been severely restricted, cutting off vital links between the rest of India and the Barak Valley, Tripura, Mizoram, and parts of Manipur.

Train Operations and Safety Measures

To manage the crisis, the railway authority is currently operating all train movements through the affected area using only Line 3 under strict safety monitoring. Passenger train operations have been suspended during nighttime hours, specifically between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m., as a safety precaution. Several trains, including the Guwahati-Silchar Express, have faced cancellations or rescheduling due to the ongoing instability.

Restoration Work Underway

Restoration efforts are underway on a war footing, involving engineering teams, disaster management personnel, and heavy machinery deployed to clear debris, stabilize slopes, and repair damaged rail beds. Despite these efforts, persistent rainfall continues to hamper progress. The Divisional Railway Manager of the Lumding Railway Division is monitoring the round-the-clock repair work at the site. Officials have stated they cannot provide a definitive timeline for the resumption of normal services, emphasizing that safety remains the top priority. The region frequently experiences infrastructure damage during the monsoon season due to landslides, waterlogging, and soil erosion.
