The Assam Jatiya Parishad has strongly condemned the detention of its Joint Secretary Kunki Chowdhury, senior advocate Prashant Bhushan, Yogendra Yadav, and other protesters in New Delhi. The group was detained while on their way to hold a peaceful demonstration at Jantar Mantar. The protest was organized over concerns surrounding the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and the possibility of eligible voters being excluded.
In a joint statement, Assam Jatiya Parishad President Lurinjyoti Gogoi and General Secretary Jagadish Bhuyan stated that every eligible citizen must be able to vote without fear.
They urged the Delhi Police and concerned authorities to immediately release all detained peaceful protesters. The leaders stressed that authorities must ensure transparent procedures and adequate public information during large-scale voter list revisions.
The party leaders stated that democracy cannot function by silencing people who raise difficult questions about electoral reforms.
They called upon the administration to respond to legitimate concerns through dialogue rather than coercive measures. The Assam Jatiya Parishad reaffirmed its commitment to defending democratic rights and electoral integrity.
