Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced the approval of a new 135.87-kilometer highway corridor connecting Guwahati and Tezpur. The project, which addresses recent social media discussions regarding state infrastructure, aims to improve regional connectivity through a significant investment.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has sanctioned this project at an estimated cost of ₹8,970.20 crore. The construction will follow the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) toll model.
This new four-lane access-controlled highway is designed to significantly reduce travel time between Guwahati and Tezpur. By doubling average speeds, the corridor will also help ease traffic congestion currently experienced on the existing NH-27 route.
The highway will stretch from Baihata Chariali to Tezpur along NH-15. The project includes five major bypasses covering a total length of 58.7 kilometers.
A key feature of this development is a 4.9-kilometer emergency landing facility for the Indian Air Force located on the Tezpur Bypass. These additions are intended to support both defense logistics and daily civilian travel requirements.
The development plan prioritizes ecological safety alongside transport efficiency.
The construction includes dedicated elephant underpasses and elevated wildlife corridors to ensure safe passage for animals. These structures are integrated into the project design to protect local wildlife while maintaining seamless transit through important economic and ecological zones in the region.
