Authorities have exhumed three unidentified graves at the Sribhumi Town Graveyard in southern Assam to investigate an old missing person case. A joint team of the Tripura Police Crime Branch and local magistrates carried out this operation following direct orders from the West Tripura Chief Judicial Magistrate Court.
The investigation aims to solve the 2011 disappearance and suspected murder of Ashish Shome, an Agartala school teacher who went missing nearly 15 years ago. After his abduction, suspected armed militants allegedly demanded a 25-lakh-rupee ransom from the family before stopping all communication.
Authorities excavated all three sites because precise burial records were missing for the decomposed bodies found in the Son Beel riverine marshland years ago. Forensic experts collected bone and dental samples from the site and sealed the skeletal fragments. These samples are being sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory for DNA matching with the family members in Tripura.
