Assam Government Begins Rapid Flood Recovery and Relief

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that the state government is working to repair damaged transport networks and infrastructure following recent monsoon floods. The administration is currently focusing on emergency repairs and long-term engineering solutions to restore connectivity, particularly in Upper Assam and the bridge sector near Amguri in Sivasagar district. Officials have also started a damage assessment for all affected properties, which is scheduled to be finished within 15 days.

Details of the Flood Impact

Heavy rainfall starting on July 19, 2026, caused severe flooding across the state, with the situation becoming most critical between July 27 and July 28. According to reports from ReliefWeb, the floods have resulted in 95 deaths and impacted more than 1.6 lakh people across 563 villages in 14 districts. Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Dibrugarh are the most severely affected districts, where technical teams and engineers are working to clear debris and stabilize riverbanks.

Financial Support for Affected Families

To assist those impacted by the disaster, the state government has increased financial aid for families who lost loved ones to a total of Rs 9 lakh. Furthermore, over one lakh families will receive immediate financial support of Rs 15,000 each, as noted by ReliefWeb. The government has also introduced a six-month loan repayment moratorium starting from July 19 to provide relief to citizens facing economic hardship.

Restoration of Regional Heritage

Beyond transport infrastructure, the administration is also prioritizing the protection and repair of local heritage sites. Financial assistance of Rs 1.5 lakh will be provided for the repair of damaged Namghars in the Sivasagar and Charaideo districts. District authorities and engineering experts remain deployed to ensure that both modern transit links and cultural structures are properly restored as part of the ongoing recovery process.
