Assam Government Announces Aid for Flood Damaged Schools
Assam Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu held a meeting at the District Commissioner’s Office in Sivasagar on August 3, 2026, to review the impact of recent floods on local schools. Official data shows that 545 out of 1,233 schools in the Sivasagar district were affected by the rising floodwaters, leaving many campuses submerged and unable to function.
Government Support for School Repairs
To address the damage, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has approved a grant of Rs 2.10 lakh for each damaged school, with the money expected to reach the institutions by August 5, 2026. Minister Pegu has ordered a full assessment of all school buildings, classrooms, furniture, and digital equipment to ensure that education can resume as soon as possible. Additionally, the government has begun distributing 1,41,719 free textbooks to 112,843 students across the affected districts to help bridge the learning gap caused by the disaster.
School Vacation Extended Due to Flood Risks
The Sivasagar district administration has extended the summer vacation for all government and private schools until August 9, 2026, due to ongoing issues like waterlogging and safety risks. Physical classes are set to resume on August 11, 2026, while school staff members are required to report for duty starting August 1 to manage sanitization and safety inspections. The government also plans to conduct field surveys between August 9 and 10 to determine the need for permanent repairs, with compensation for major losses expected to be paid by late August or early September.
Additional Relief for Families and Community
Beyond school infrastructure, the government is providing financial help to the wider community in Sivasagar and Charaideo. Families who are unable to return home by August 9 will receive Rs 10,000 in assistance on August 10. Furthermore, the state has sanctioned Rs 1.5 lakh for every damaged Namghar in the region and announced a waiver of electricity bills up to 300 units for residents in the affected districts for the month.
