Assam Flood Death Toll Reaches 97 Affecting Thousands

Severe monsoon rains have caused widespread flooding in Assam, leading to a rising death toll and the displacement of thousands of residents. As of August 7, 2026, officials confirmed that 97 people have lost their lives due to the ongoing disaster. Currently, more than 168,000 people across 15 districts are affected, with two new deaths recently recorded in the Golaghat and Udalguri districts.

Relief Operations and Government Aid

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority has set up 133 relief camps and distribution centers to help those who lost their homes. These facilities are providing shelter to approximately 45,000 individuals. To support affected families, the state government has provided interim financial assistance of Rs 15,000 to 43,000 families in the Sivasagar district. Additionally, the government has started a formal assessment of property and household damage, which is expected to be finished within 15 days to help with further compensation.

Insurance and Central Government Support

To assist with financial recovery, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India issued a directive on August 4, 2026, for insurers to fast-track claims in the most severely impacted districts. The Central Government has also stepped in to provide funding. On August 1, 2026, Union Home Minister Amit Shah approved the release of Rs 379.35 crore for Assam as part of a larger allocation from the State Disaster Response Fund, as noted in the official government press release.

Current Situation on the Ground

Despite rescue efforts from the National Disaster Response Force, the Army, and various NGOs, the situation remains critical in several areas. The Dhansiri River is still flowing above the danger level at Numaligarh. While officials continue to work on restoration, the National Disaster Management Authority has stated that the current flooding is among the worst seen in the state since 1988.
