Assam Flood Death Toll Reaches 97 With Many Still Affected

The flood situation in Assam remains critical as the official death toll has climbed to 97 following two new fatalities reported in Golaghat and Udalguri districts. According to the latest data from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) as of August 7-8, 2026, over 1.68 lakh people are currently affected across 15 districts in the state.

Impacted Districts and Relief Efforts

Golaghat is currently the worst-hit district with nearly 59,000 residents impacted, followed by Sivasagar with over 48,000 people facing difficulties. Other areas experiencing significant flooding include Jorhat, Charaideo, Udalguri, and Dhemaji. Authorities have set up 133 relief camps and distribution centers to provide shelter and emergency supplies to approximately 45,000 displaced individuals. The Dhansiri (South) River at Numaligarh continues to flow above the danger level, leading officials to warn residents to avoid the riverbanks.

Government Assessment and Recovery Plans

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed a door-to-door assessment of flood damage to be conducted from August 9 to August 30, 2026, in the four most severely impacted districts. The government plans to provide interim assistance of Rs 15,000 to over 75,000 families and ex-gratia payments of up to Rs 9 lakh for those who lost their lives. While schools in some areas are set to reopen on August 10 and railway services in Sivasagar have resumed, fresh flooding has occurred in Darrang and parts of Jorhat due to overflowing rivers.
