Assam Flood Death Toll Reaches 89 With Lakhs Affected

The official death toll from the floods in Assam has risen to 89, with over 1.28 lakh people still affected across ten districts. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, Sivasagar is the worst-hit district, followed by Charaideo and Jorhat. Additionally, 14,230 hectares of cropland remain submerged due to the ongoing flood situation.

Relief Operations and Property Damage

Local authorities are running 55 relief camps and distribution centers to support 11,066 displaced individuals. The floods have caused significant damage to infrastructure, including 878 partially damaged houses and 302 fully destroyed homes. Furthermore, 301 cattle sheds, various roads, and schools have been impacted. The loss of livestock is substantial, with over 55,000 animals washed away and 54,500 poultry birds lost in the affected regions.

River Water Levels and Weather Warnings

The Dhansiri river at Numaligarh is currently flowing above the danger level. Other major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, Ranganadi, Dikhou, and Burhidihing, are nearing the danger mark. The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for most districts in Assam, predicting heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours. Similar warnings for extremely heavy rain have also been issued for the neighboring states of Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya.

Government Support and Financial Aid

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has visited the affected areas to monitor relief efforts. The government has provided financial assistance of ₹5 lakh each to the families of 10 flood victims. Additionally, the state has approved over ₹41 crore in aid for 9,289 beneficiaries under the PM Surya Ghar scheme to help residents in the flood-hit areas recover from the disaster.
