Assam Farmers Learn Backyard Nursery Skills For Income

Marginalised farmers in Assam received hands-on training in backyard nursery management to build sustainable livelihoods.

Six marginalised farmers from the Kohora River Basin took part in a one-day training programme organised by the conservation organisation Aaranyak at Englepathar village. The session focused on practical skills for Assam lemon and black pepper cutting propagation. Progressive farmer Phumen Terang demonstrated soil mixture preparation, polybag filling, planting of cuttings, and proper nursery maintenance.

New Income Opportunities For Farmers

Backyard nurseries offer a low-investment livelihood option for communities dependent on subsistence farming and daily-wage work. Participant Dorsing Engti noted that the training taught him cutting techniques to grow saplings for sale to PIRBI. Larbeen Teronpi from Aaranyak discussed homestead cultivation and market demand to encourage small-scale enterprise development.
