The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee has officially written to the Election Commission demanding the immediate removal of the Nagaon District Election Officer. The party lodged a strong objection against the official press note issued regarding the violent attack on the Congress convoy at Borma Bazar in Samaguri on September 21 during the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency by-election campaign.
APCC General Secretary Bipul Gogoi stated that
the attack was neither sudden nor unforeseen because the administration had been repeatedly alerted in advance. Member of Parliament Rakibul Hussain had informed the District Commissioner multiple times about the gathering of anti-social elements and the stockpiling of stones at Borma Bazar.
No security measures were put in place despite assurances, and communications were also made with the Superintendent of Police regarding the visit of senior leaders including former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel.
The Congress vehemently disputed the press note from the District Election Officer for attempting to downplay the incident.
The party dismissed claims that stones and bottles accidentally struck vehicles and that no harm was caused to the occupants. In reality, AICC Secretary Manoj Chauhan and Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress President Mira Borthakur sustained serious injuries while several vehicles were vandalised.
The Congress asserted that the attack was led by BJP leader Mujibur Rahman and accused the police of letting a captured assailant go free. Due to the failure to provide security and attempts to shield perpetrators, the party has lost confidence in the neutrality of the official and urged the Election Commission to assign responsibilities to another senior officer.
