Assam CM Plans Permanent Solution for Dibrugarh River Erosion

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the Chabua region in Dibrugarh district to assess the damage caused by Brahmaputra River erosion. The Chief Minister inspected areas including Balijan, Pukhurijan, Dinjan, and Rohmoria while meeting with local residents and government officials to review ongoing protection efforts. Emergency measures are currently being carried out by the Water Resources Department using geo-bags and geo-tubes to stabilize the riverbanks.

Scientific Approach to Erosion Control

During the visit, the Chief Minister stated that the state government is moving toward a permanent solution to address the recurring issue of riverbank erosion. The Assam government has announced a collaboration with technical experts from IIT Guwahati to develop a long-term strategy. This partnership aims to use scientific research to design a more effective way to manage the river flow and protect land in the affected districts.

Funding for Mitigation Projects

To support these efforts, the government has proposed a major project to strengthen the riverbanks and prevent further loss of property. A new ₹90-crore erosion mitigation project is planned to fortify vulnerable areas and protect local communities living along the river. Officials and engineers are working to ensure these protection measures are implemented to reduce the impact of the Brahmaputra on the district.
