Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone for a major thermal power project in the state. The new power plant is set to boost the energy sector in the region.
The project is worth Rs 48,000 crore and involves a 3,200 MW Ultra-Supercritical Thermal Power Plant. It is located at Chapar in the Dhubri district of lower Assam. The plant will feature four units of 800 MW each and will be commissioned in phases starting from December 2030. The project was awarded following a competitive bidding process by the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited.
The construction phase is expected to generate up to 20,000 jobs, with around 5,000 jobs created once the plant becomes operational. Local contractors, suppliers, and transport operators will also find new business opportunities through this development. The project is a key outcome of previous investor summits aimed at increasing industrial growth and revenue in the state.
