Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone for Adani Power Limited's 3,200 MW Ultra-Supercritical Thermal Power Plant at Chapar in lower Assam’s Dhubri district. The ceremony took place on Sunday, marking the start of a major energy infrastructure initiative in the state.
The Rs 48,000-crore project is expected to generate up to 20,000 jobs during the construction phase and about 5,000 jobs once operational. The Chapar plant forms a key part of a broader Rs 63,000-crore power investment in Assam, with commissioning scheduled in phases starting from December 2030. The thermal power project will also create opportunities for local contractors, suppliers, transport operators, and service providers.
The Chapar plant will comprise four 800 MW units and utilize ultra-supercritical technology with modern environmental safeguards. Once commissioned, the facility will supply reliable and affordable power to meet Assam’s household, commercial, and industrial electricity requirements. Adani Power secured the project after emerging as the successful bidder and receiving the Letter of Award from the state power distribution authorities.
