Assam and Arunachal Set Two Month Deadline for Border Talks

Representatives from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh met on October 13, 2026, at the New Circuit House in Biswanath to discuss long-standing border disputes. The meeting focused on resolving territorial issues between the Papum Pare district of Arunachal Pradesh and the Biswanath and Lakhimpur districts of Assam. Both states have now set a two-month deadline to settle all remaining boundary matters.

Details of the Border Discussions

Senior leaders, including Cabinet Ministers Keshab Mahanta from Assam and Balo Raja from Arunachal Pradesh, led the delegations. The officials reaffirmed their commitment to the Namsai Declaration to guide the resolution process. The committee will escalate any unresolved issues to the respective Chief Ministers of both states.

Administrative Steps for Resolution

Local Deputy Commissioners have been assigned to resolve minor issues involving 22 villages. For two major territorial disputes, officials are drafting proposed solutions for review at the next meeting. The plans include evaluating land-swap or land-alternative proposals to address village settlements and farmland issues.

Demarcation and Future Planning

The Survey of India will assist in the official installation of boundary pillars once ground verification is complete. The ongoing verification process aims to prevent future encroachments and ensure peaceful co-existence for border communities.
