Protests have grown stronger in Arunachal Pradesh against the proposed 11,200 MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project.
Local communities are strongly opposing the dam project in Geku and Yingkiong within the Upper Siang district. These demonstrations are organized by the Siang Upper Multi-Purpose Project Affected Area Youth Association and the Youth Wing of the Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum.
Protests persist despite strict bans on gatherings of more than five people near government installations issued by District Magistrate Dr. Ashok Tajo.
Tensions increased sharply after authorities detained four local residents under the Arunachal Pradesh Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. The Campaign Against State Repression and the Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee have demanded the immediate release of these detained activists.
Demonstrators are fighting against Pre-Feasibility Report activities because they fear losing their ancestral land and facing mass displacement.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu has agreed to reduce security forces in the Siang Valley and withdraw police cases against the protesters to open talks. Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein stated the project will help manage water resources, while Union Minister Kiren Rijiju asked the Adi community leaders to join formal discussions.
Protesters remain firm that no work should happen without clear community consent and proper environmental studies.
