Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu stated that his government will hold extensive consultations with affected communities if the Siang Upper Multi-Purpose Project moves past the feasibility stage.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu said that completing the Preliminary Feasibility Report is the immediate priority to determine whether the proposed structure can be technically developed.
The report is expected to take three months covering November, December and January to provide clarity on location and technical parameters in Seismic Zone V.
Khandu emphasized that the project has wider strategic and security implications for India in view of water infrastructure developments by China.
He stated that the proposal must be examined scientifically through a Preliminary Feasibility Report before deciding on Social Impact Assessment and Environment Impact Assessment.
The Chief Minister assured that public hearings and consultations would allow people to reject the project if the process establishes it should not proceed.
Affected villages will be consulted regarding relocation and receive compensation for land acquisition in accordance with applicable rules.
