Arunachal Chief Minister Promises Talks On Siang Dam

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has stated that his government will hold extensive consultations with affected communities if the Siang Upper Multi-Purpose Project moves past the feasibility stage.

Focus On Preliminary Feasibility Report

Speaking at an interaction program in Boleng, Chief Minister Pema Khandu explained that the immediate priority is completing the Preliminary Feasibility Report to check technical viability. He noted that if experts determine the project cannot be built, there will be no further process. The report is expected to take three months to assess parameters like Seismic Zone V safety and water protection.

National Security And Strategic Importance

Khandu emphasized that the project is crucial for India national security and defence preparedness due to upstream infrastructure developments by China. He stated that the proposal must be examined scientifically rather than rejected without assessment. If found feasible, subsequent stages will include Social Impact Assessment, Environment Impact Assessment, and a Detailed Project Report.

Public Consultation And Compensation

The Chief Minister assured that the government will engage with local communities, Gram Panchayats, and villages point by point before any final action. He clarified that affected villages will be consulted regarding relocation choices and compensation rules will apply for land acquisition. Khandu added that the public will have the opportunity to reject the project through the prescribed process if public hearings establish it should not proceed.
