Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu stated that his government will hold wide consultations with affected local communities if the Siang Upper Multi-Purpose Project moves past the feasibility stage.
The state government is currently focused on completing the Preliminary Feasibility Report to check if the project can be built safely. Chief Minister Pema Khandu explained that this initial report will take three months to finish.
If experts find the project cannot be built due to technical reasons or seismic risks in Zone V, the process will stop immediately. The proposed project is being viewed as a crucial national infrastructure development with major security implications. Khandu pointed out that China has announced large water projects and diversion plans.
A scientific and technical assessment is necessary to understand water security and defence preparedness before making any final decisions. The Chief Minister promised that proper public hearings, social impact assessments, and environmental studies will be conducted if the project is proven feasible. Khandu assured that affected villages will be consulted for relocation and residents will receive proper compensation for land and assets under applicable rules.
He also stated that the public will have the final opportunity to reject the project through prescribed processes if local concerns remain unresolved.
