Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu stated that his government will hold extensive consultations with affected communities if the Siang Upper Multi-Purpose Project moves past the feasibility stage.
The Arunachal Pradesh government wants the Preliminary Feasibility Report completed to decide if the project can be technically developed. Chief Minister Pema Khandu stated that if experts determine the project cannot be built after this report, there will be no further process. The report is expected to take three months and will check seismic safety and water protection.
The proposed project is viewed as a national project with wider strategic and security implications for India. Khandu pointed out that China announced a large water infrastructure project in 2021 and India needs to examine the project scientifically. He emphasized that the issue relates to India national security and defence preparedness.
The government promised extensive talks with Gram Panchayats, villages, and local communities if the project continues. Khandu clarified that affected villages will be consulted regarding relocation choices and compensation for land acquisition will follow applicable rules. He also assured that people can reject the project through the prescribed process if public hearings establish it should not proceed.
