Arunachal CM Promises Public Consultation On Siang Project

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has stated that his government will hold extensive consultations with affected communities if the Siang Upper Multi-Purpose Project moves past the feasibility stage.

Focus On Preliminary Feasibility Report

Speaking at Boleng in Siang district, Khandu explained that the immediate priority is completing the Preliminary Feasibility Report to check if the project is technically possible. The Chief Minister noted that if experts decide the project cannot be built, the process will stop immediately. He added that the report will take three months to finish and will check the safety of the area located in Seismic Zone V.

National Security And Strategic Importance

Khandu described the project as a national initiative with key security and defense implications. He pointed to large water infrastructure projects and diversion plans announced by China, stressing the need for a scientific and technical examination of the Siang project.

Consultations And Relocation Assurances

The Chief Minister assured that if the project proves technically feasible, authorities will engage directly with local villages, Gram Panchayats, and affected communities through social and environmental impact assessments. Khandu confirmed that affected villages will be consulted regarding relocation choices, and landowners will receive compensation according to rules along with proper infrastructure like roads, schools, and electricity. He also stated that people will have the chance to reject the project through the proper process if public hearings show it should not continue.
