Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has stated that his government will hold extensive consultations with affected communities if the Siang Upper Multi-Purpose Project moves past the feasibility stage.
The Preliminary Feasibility Report is the immediate priority and will take three months to complete to determine if the project can be built in Seismic Zone V. Khandu explained that if experts find the project cannot be built, the process will stop immediately.
The project is being viewed as a national security measure due to water infrastructure developments by China. Khandu stated that the project requires scientific examination rather than a rushed decision.
The government will engage with local villages and Gram Panchayats if the project is found to be technically feasible. Khandu assured that affected landowners will receive proper compensation and consultation regarding relocation, while the public will have the opportunity to reject the project through prescribed processes if needed.
