Arunachal CM Pema Khandu Talks On Siang Project
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu stated that the government will hold extensive consultations with affected communities if the Siang Upper Multi-Purpose Project moves beyond the feasibility stage.
During an interaction in Boleng, Chief Minister Pema Khandu explained that the ongoing Preliminary Feasibility Report is meant to check if the project can be technically built in Seismic Zone V. He noted that if experts decide the project cannot be built, the process will stop immediately.
Project Details And National Security
Khandu emphasized that the project is being viewed as a national project with important strategic and security implications for India. He mentioned that China had announced a large water infrastructure project in 2021, and India needs to examine the proposed Siang project scientifically and technically.
Consultation And Compensation
The Chief Minister assured that if the project moves forward after the feasibility stage, the government will engage directly with local communities, Gram Panchayats, and villages. He added that affected villages will be consulted regarding relocation, and landowners will receive compensation according to applicable rules.
