Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu stated that his government will conduct extensive consultations with affected communities if the Siang Upper Multi-Purpose Project moves past the feasibility stage. The preliminary feasibility report is currently the top priority and is expected to take three months to complete.
The initial report will determine if the project is technically feasible in Arunachal Pradesh's Seismic Zone V and what protection it offers against water releases from upstream. If experts decide the project cannot be built, there will be no further process.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the project is important for national security and defence preparedness in light of infrastructure projects announced by China.
The government will engage with local communities through Gram Panchayats and villages if the project is found feasible after the preliminary report.
Social impact and environment impact assessments will precede any further action, and affected villagers will be consulted regarding relocation and compensation rules. Khandu also mentioned that the project could bring large investments and job opportunities for local youth.
