Arunachal CM Assures Public Consultation On Siang Project

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has stated that the government will hold extensive consultations with affected communities if the Siang Upper Multi-Purpose Project moves beyond the feasibility stage.

Focus On Preliminary Feasibility Report

Chief Minister Pema Khandu stated that the immediate priority is to complete the Preliminary Feasibility Report without delay to check the technical viability of the project. He spoke during an interaction with government officers and officials in Boleng, noting that the report will take three months to finish. The report will assess whether the project can be built safely in Seismic Zone V and evaluate water protection levels.

National Security And Strategic Importance

Khandu emphasized that the project is important for national security and defense preparedness in light of large water infrastructure developments by China. He noted that India and Bangladesh previously sought details from China regarding water-sharing concerns without success. The Chief Minister stated that the project requires scientific and technical examination rather than a rushed decision.

Public Consultation And Relocation Assurances

The Chief Minister assured that if the project proves technically feasible, the government will consult Gram Panchayats, villages, and local communities point by point. Subsequent stages will include a Social Impact Assessment, Environment Impact Assessment, and Detailed Project Report. Khandu clarified that affected villages will be consulted on relocation choices and receive compensation for land acquisition according to rules.
