Arunachal CM Assures Public Consultation On Siang Dam

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has stated that the government will hold extensive talks with affected communities if the Siang Upper Multi-Purpose Project goes beyond the feasibility stage.

Focus On Preliminary Feasibility Report

Chief Minister Pema Khandu said the immediate priority is to complete the Preliminary Feasibility Report without delay to check technical clarity. He spoke during an interaction program with government officers at Boleng and noted that the report will take three months. The report will check if the project is feasible in Seismic Zone V and examine protection against water release from upstream.

National Security And China Factor

Khandu stated that the project should be seen as a national project with strategic and security implications for India. He mentioned that China announced a large water infrastructure project in 2021 and India and Bangladesh sought details which were not accepted. He added that the proposal needs scientific and technical examination rather than a direct rejection or acceptance.

Consultations And Local Concerns

The Chief Minister assured that the government will engage with Gram Panchayats and local communities once a technically feasible location is identified. He clarified that Social Impact Assessment, Environment Impact Assessment and Detailed Project Report will follow applicable laws. Khandu also promised that affected villages will be consulted regarding relocation and compensation while public hearings will allow people to reject the project if needed.
