Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu stated that his government will hold extensive consultations with affected communities if the Siang Upper Multi-Purpose Project moves past the feasibility stage. The preliminary feasibility report is currently the main priority to check if the project can be built safely. Addressing an interaction programme at Boleng, Khandu explained that the initial report will take three months to finish. This report will test technical feasibility in a seismic zone and check protection levels against upstream water release.
Khandu noted that the project is important for national security and defence preparedness.
India and Bangladesh previously sought details from China regarding a large water infrastructure project without receiving responses. The chief minister stated that the proposal must be examined scientifically rather than rejected or accepted without assessment.
He added that public hearings and community consultations will follow if technical studies are successful. The chief minister assured that affected villages will be consulted regarding relocation choices and proper compensation.
He promised to tour the Siang district to personally hear concerns from local villagers and officers. Khandu mentioned that the project could bring major investments and create jobs for local youth.
Officials were urged to help facilitate informed discussions to prevent misinformation.
