Akhil Gogoi Starts Protest Over Assam Disaster Relief Funds

Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi has started an indefinite Satyagraha on the grounds of the Assam Legislative Assembly in Guwahati. He is protesting the delayed response and missing relief compensation following a disaster that happened on July 19.

Protest Details

Speaking about the protest, he started the Satyagraha at the Mahatma Gandhi statue inside the Assembly premises on Friday. No formal talks have been started by top administration officials even though more than 24 hours have passed since the protest began.

Relief Fund Demands

The protest demands the urgent disbursement of the promised Rs 25,000 relief package to all families affected by the disaster. Around 70 per cent of families received an initial instalment of Rs 15,000, but the remaining balance has not been paid, and many families have received nothing.

Government Response

The state government cited a poor financial position and stated that disaster compensation must be secured from the Central government. Akhil Gogoi stated that the protest will continue until the state or central government announces concrete compensation measures and a clear timeline for fund distribution.
