Akhil Gogoi Starts Indefinite Satyagraha Over Flood Relief

Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi started an indefinite Satyagraha on October 2, 2026, at the Mahatma Gandhi statue inside the Assam Legislative Assembly premises in Guwahati. The protest challenges the state government for delays in giving relief money to families affected by recent floods. Gogoi started this protest after an October 1 deadline he set for the government to finish aid distribution ended without action.

Demands for Flood Compensation

Gogoi says that 30% to 40% of flood-affected households in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat districts have not received the promised ₹15,000 interim financial assistance. He also states that victims in Sivasagar and Charaideo are still waiting for an extra ₹10,000 in special relief funds. His main demands include the fast release of these payments, a ₹10 lakh compensation package for families with major losses, and a CBI inquiry into the Upper Assam floods, as reported by PTI News and PTI News.

Police Action and Government Response

On October 3, 2026, police detained several Raijor Dal leaders, including Gyanashree Bora, Rasel Hussain, and Bhasco De Saikia, during a related protest near the Janata Bhawan state secretariat. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma called the protest school-level politics. The Chief Minister stated that the government is surveying damages and has identified 55,000 families for help. Gogoi has vowed to continue the Satyagraha until the government gives a clear timeline for the release of the compensation.
